When verifying tax returns are filed, there are several options that work in obtaining transcripts. Here are the best and easiest options available for you to choose from.
The main options that are generally acceptable for authenticating taxes are:
Provide proof of payment (cancelled check) or refund (deposit in bank account) of the amount matching the tax liability for that year.
Additional options include (but may not be generally acceptable):
Proof of IRS Payment Plan for taxes owed. Online Payment Agreements (OPA) are not acceptable unless the OPA contains all of the following information: • Your name • Monthly payment amount • Tax year • Total balance due
An IRS form 9325, with the following requirements met: • Box 1 must be checked • The electronic filing services section in box 1 must show a CPA or Tax Preparer’s name.
You can View Your Tax Account Information, an additional IRS online resource that provides current payoffs, outstanding balances, and payment histories.
Provide a notice of tax filing from a Taxpayer Advocate Service representative: • Tax Payer Advocate Service (TAS) is an independent organization within the IRS and assists tax payers concerning a variety of tax issues.
Written verification from the IRS or a third-party tax software vendor (ie. TurboTax) showing the return have been accepted. • A mobile device screenshot is acceptable, provided the information matches the returns.
Copy of signed 1040’s showing an “Official Received Date Stamp” on page 1 of the tax return. • Only IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TAC) can provide this. See the Taxpayer Assistance Office Locator for locations.
